MOTORSPORT

* update to follow *

Since an early age Gary has been keen on the motor vehicle, but sadly only got the opportunity to actually go motor racing when he was in his mid-40s.  However, better late than never and after a tough baptism in the Ford Credit Fiesta Challenge, one of the support races to the British Touring Car Championship in '95/'96, his first win came in July '98 at Castle Combe in the Proton Coupe Cup Series, instigated and sponsored by the Malaysian manufacturer.

Gary has carried The Blues Band's colours in the form of advertising on his cars throughout his racing endeavours, which in '98 and '99 received coverage on Sky Sports.  He came third overall in the '99 Championship and was interviewed several times during Sky's coverage, never missing the opportunity to get a Blues Band plug in!

Music commitments prevented any more than a single race in a Radical Clubsport at Snetterton at the end of the 2000 season, and similar commitments currently restrict his 2001 programme. However, he is open to appropriate offers so if Frank Williams, Ron Dennis or Eddie Jordan (whose Silverstone GP paddock parties Gary has played bass at a few times along with Eddie on drums) wish to contact Gary via this website, he is prepared to moderate his demands to a low seven figure sum .....!

3/7/03:  Gary raced in the Willhire Britcar 500 race at Snetterton last weekend and together with Peter Gillatt and Mark Clynes, co-drove Peter's Vauhall Vectra race car to a fine 3rd in class.  The picture below shows the car, the drivers, the trophies (!) and most importantly the pit crew, headed up by team boss Mike Gorton of MGA Motorsport, who despite the drivers breaking the car several times managed to keep it running to the end of the eight and a half hour marathon.

**** RACE INSTRUCTION ****

To keep his hand in and satisfy his need for speed, Gary is also now an ARDS-approved race instructor at Thruxton.  He is also available on a one-to-one personal instruction basis to drivers intending to race or simply improve their ability to handle a car on a circuit.  Please e-mail aroneco(at)yahoo.mail for further details.
