PAYBACK

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2002

I can’t tell you if it’s wrong or right

For you to be here in my arms tonight

I ain’t your conscience, I’m your temptation

But I don’t do nothing pure for fun

He took my money – all my cash

He had what’s mine – I’m taking what’s his

This is the payback – yeah the payback

Well I’ve always seen that look in your eye

The one that says hey why don’t you try

I guess I knew where that could end

But you were with a man I thought my friend

But then he took my money – all my cash

He had what’s mine – I’m taking what’s his

This is the payback – yeah the payback

Well I ain’t proud of what I’ve done

But I guess it’s better than using a gun

(I don’t wanna hurt you but you ain’t dumb

you’re just playing this for fun)

The whole damn deal’s about stocks and shares

I bought the stock - now he’s gotta share

I lent him the cash to save his company

But he knew it was gone – still took the money from me

Yeh he took my money – all my cash

He had what’s mine – I’m taking what’s his

This is the payback – yeah the payback

Well I ain’t proud of what I’ve done

But I guess it’s better than using a gun

(I don’t wanna hurt you but you ain’t dumb

you’re just playing this for fun)

This is the payback – yeah the payback

This is the payback – yeah the payback

MAY YOU NOW FIND PEACE

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2002

May you now find peace, may you now find hope

Live the dream of a whole new start

May you now find peace, may you now find love

Live the dream of a whole new start

And after all the pain of the trouble and the strife

After all the violence of interrupted life

After all the struggle simply to survive

The worries of all families, concern for and of friends

Injury to body, mind – needs heart to help them mend

May you now find peace, may you now find hope

Live the dream of a whole new start

May you now find peace, may you now find love

Live the dream of a whole new start

Even in the bleakest hour, when all was dark

Even when it takes an end to create a start

Even when it all defies plain common sense

And the fairness of what happens is impossible to see

Still the human spirit overcomes its worst to stay free

May you now find peace, may you now find hope

Live the dream of a whole new start

May you now find peace, may you now find love

Live the dream of a whole new start

Way up in the clouds may seem a better place

Maybe it’s there and maybe not

Hope gives us the strength to try and carry on

To find love, turn weak to strong

May you now find peace, may you now find hope

Live the dream of a whole new start

May you now find peace, may you now find love

Live the dream of a whole new start

CAN’T GET ARRESTED

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2003

Almost broke and busted, thirty three years old

A legend in his own mind, a slave to rock and roll

Hard times got tougher, now the music don’t pay the bills

What’s needed here’s a job that don’t need no skills

Can’t get arrested - don’t have no school degree

Can’t get arrested - and things just don’t come for free

You can breath the air for the nothing

And we know that talk is cheap

But it takes more than our art

To keep us off the street

And though your heart is feeling heavy

Still you have to make ends meet

Now it’s all for more than two

The kids, they got to eat

Checked out the vacant ads for ageing failed rock stars

Experience is what’s required, except for selling cars

Signed on the dotted line, got me a sheepskin coat

Stepped into reality, it was that that hurt the most

Can’t get arrested – couldn’t move no motor cars

Can’t get arrested – found a way but (it) sure was hard

You can breath the air for the nothing

And we know that talk is cheap

But it takes more than our art

To keep us off the street

And though your heart is feeling heavy

Still you have to make ends meet

Now it’s all for more than two

The kids, they got to eat

Now it’s all for more than two

The kids, they got to eat

BORN TOO PRETTY

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2004

Mirror mirror on the wall

Who is the fairest of them all?

Sure ain’t fate – can be a crueller twist

And the pictures hide what the camera’s missed

Born and raised in a suburban street

She smiled a lot and life was sweet

She was barely ten years old

When her body changed and the men smiled more

Could she be born too pretty, such a strange thing to pity

Could she be born too pretty, beauty can become the beast

To those we change the way we treat

Looks are sometimes all we see

Sometimes they are all we need

We look no further than a smile

And substance hides behind the style

The little girl grew into a babe

And all the boys they came out to play

She thought they were all she’d crave

So she closed her books to become their slave

Could she be born too pretty, such a strange thing to pity

Could she be born too pretty, beauty can become the beast

To those we change the way we treat

What might have been was never seen

What might have been just stayed a dream

She’d never had to work too hard

To find admirers to give her heart

It’s all too easy in this media age

Just to aspire to the printed page

She was more than just a pretty face

But no less weak than the human race

YOU CAN'T QUIT YOUR LOVE FOR ME

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2003

You could print it in the paper

You could put it on TV

You could send it in a letter

You could e-mail my PC

You could try me on my mobile

Send a text for me to see ….

But you can’t tell me darling …. no no no

That you can quit your love for me …… oh no

You could shout it from the rooftops

You could scream it in my face

You could write it with an airplane

Vapour trails up in space

You could spray it in graffiti

Maybe carve it in a tree ….

But you can’t tell me darling …. no no no

That you can quit your love for me …… oh no

I guess I seem too confident

I guess it seems like arrogance to you …. it’s true

And though I know it makes you kind of mad

You know we’ve got each other real, real bad …….. so bad

You could print it in the paper

You could put it on TV

You could send it in a letter

You could e-mail my PC

You could try me on my mobile

Send a text for me to see ….

But you can’t tell me darling …. no no no

That you can quit your love for me …… oh no

No you can’t tell me darling …. no no no

That you can quit your love for me …… oh no

WAKE ME WHEN IT’S OVER

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2003

Wake me when it’s over

‘til then let me sleep

Take me from the anger

Keep me from deceit

Close my eyes and dream away

Imagine ‘til it’s safe

Take me where the air is warm

Next to your face

Wake me when it’s over

‘til then let me sleep

Pray me an illusion

But don’t go too deep

Find me a better place

Please excuse my greed

Call it heaven but keep it real

Cut me – I bleed

Wake me when it’s over

‘til then let me sleep

Make with your fighting

If it really won’t keep

‘til then let me sleep

‘til then let me sleep

SO LONELY

by Fletcher/Gurl/Fletcher

Copyright Mann Music 1981

I walk the streets in the dead of night

You know I’m so nervous in the broad daylight

I don’t understand what my problem is

I said somebody tell me now, what gives?

My lady loves me, tells me all the time

Well I’m so glad that she is mine

I tell you, I got money, fine house & a car

I need help, I need a drink, I need that all-night bar

I get so lonely I could cry

I get so lonely I could cry

I get so lonely I could cry

Don’t ever leave me, don’t ever say goodbye

I’ve been around, been coast to coast

Well I’ve seen it all, yeah, more than most

You bet I’ve been a fool ‘cos I ain’t so smart

I need help, I need a drink, I need that all-night bar

I get so lonely I could cry

I get so lonely I could cry

I get so lonely I could cry

Don’t ever leave me, don’t ever say goodbye

Well I’m a modern man, I’m a sign of the times

Well I’ve got it all and that ain’t no crime

But then you don’t have to be poor to be blue

I need help, I need a drink and baby, I need you

I get so lonely I could cry

I get so lonely I could cry

I get so lonely I could cry

Don’t ever leave me, don’t ever say goodbye

I get so lonely I could cry

I get so lonely I could cry

I get so lonely I could cry

Don’t ever leave me, don’t ever say goodbye

Don’t ever leave me, don’t ever say goodbye

Don’t ever leave me, don’t ever say goodbye

SOLANKI’S KNIFE

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2002

Where are you now – deep sleep or some place else?

I need to talk to you, I need your help

If you can’t find me can’t I come to you?

Hold my hand and squeeze, I’ll know it’s you

And I always knew you wouldn’t go

The stainless mirror told me so

You nearly stepped from this life to the next

Was there a choice from which you could select?

Did you hear a voice?  Perhaps you saw a face?

Was there never ever any empty space?

And I always knew you wouldn’t go

The stainless mirror told me so

And somewhere out there someone said a prayer

Did you hear just how much they all cared?

And after all the pain and strife

The toughest time of all our lives

It was pure spirit - held onto life

And the surgeon’s blade – Solanki’s knife

They say that some things never ever change

But our lives’ll never be the same again

And though few of us will really look for change

I’ll take it if it means that you are staying

And I always knew you wouldn’t go

The stainless mirror told me so

And I always knew you wouldn’t go

The stainless mirror told me so

A LIE IS A LIE

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2003

I know it’s a lie but it feels okay

I wanna believe what I hear today

I got faith in the guys up top

Though I know the truth gets lost

I wanna believe in right and wrong

I wanna believe the weak get strong

I don’t wanna hear no told you so

I just wanna try and move my own small world along

There’s nothing left that you can say

I saw him here just the other day

I heard you’re playing with your back door man

Better find me a brand new plan

I wanna believe in right and wrong

I wanna believe the weak get strong

I don’t wanna hear no told you so

I just wanna try and move my own small world along

Just a guy on the street trying to make ends meet

I know it ain’t right but I still can sleep

In the wider world or at my back door

I can’t change much - that’s for sure

I wanna get involved but there ain’t no time

A lie is a lie, and that’s the crime

I wanna believe in right and wrong

I wanna believe the weak get strong

I don’t wanna hear no told you so

I just wanna try and move my own small world along

TOO MUCH

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2003

I’ve got a good thing - A good thing in my heart

Such a good thing - And I knew right from the start

I didn’t need to find no sign - To help me understand

I didn’t need to check my list - There was no master plan

Wasn’t in my forecast - Thought I’d missed my time

She’s…. Too much, too much

Too much to be mine

Yeah… Too much, too much

Too much to be mine

Lately I’d been thinking - Thinking ‘bout my life

And it’s a strange thing - But I’d kinda missed my wife

I don’t mean we weren’t together - Working our way through

I hadn’t meant to take for granted - But I guess that’s what we do

Finally, though after too much time - I could see things as I should

She’s…. Too much, too much

Too much to be mine

Yeah… Too much, too much

Too much to be mine

Sure there’s sad times to forget

All the bad times to regret

‘Take a change to make you see

What you’ve got was meant to be

I’ve got a good thing - A good thing in my heart

Such a good thing - And I knew right from the start

I didn’t need to find no sign - To help me understand

I didn’t need to check my list - There was no master plan

Wasn’t in my forecast - Thought I’d missed my time

She’s…. Too much, too much

Too much to be mine

Yeah… Too much, too much

Too much to be mine

YOU ARE TRUE

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2002

Don’t tell me that you don’t

Babe I know you do

Don’t tell me that you don’t

Babe I know you do

You’ve started telling lies

Come on now tell me why

Don’t take me for a fool

It seems as though you do

Don’t take me for a fool

It seems as though you do

Let’s stop this wasting time

I think I’ve seen the signs

Don’t need to know who

Don’t need to know when

Don’t need to know where

Ain’t sure that I care

Seems like you wanna be the backdoor girl

You wanna be the hoochie coochie girl

Do you think you’re li'l Jane the congaroo

Or is it all in my mind and really you are true

Just keep me from myself

I know I need your help

Just keep me from myself

I know I need your help

Can’t believe that your are mine

I doubt it all the time

Don’t need to know who

Don’t need to know when

Don’t need to know where

Ain’t sure that I care

Seems like you wanna be the backdoor girl

You wanna be the hoochie coochie girl

Do you think you’re ‘lil Jane the congaroo

Or is it all in my mind and really you are true

YOU TOOK ME TO THE EDGE

by Gary Fletcher

Copyright Control/Arone Songs 2004

I heard you’re leaving – glad to see you go

You broke my heart – and don’t even know

You’d have a question - if you knew I exist

But I ain’t no place – on your list

You got the power and you play the game

You got the ways to drive a man insane

It ain’t a look or just what words can say

The whole damn package take my breath away

I guess I managed to survive

Before you came and eat me alive

You took me to the edge – but I didn’t jump

You took me to the edge – but I didn’t jump

Is there magic - in the spells you weave

Or is there devil - that we just can’t see

Will you release me - find a brand new start

Or will your leaving tear me apart

You got the power and you play the game etc

How could just a taste take me all the way

I didn’t want that ticket still I had to pay

I was sliding on down – I was nearly sunk

You took me to the edge – but I didn’t jump

How many times do we pass this way

So many ways we can go astray

But there’s a feeling – a kind a buzz

That once we’ve been there – can’t get enough

You got the power and you play the game etc
